The Listening Post Christchurch is a specialist retailer of component-based

Hi-Fi and Home Theatre systems.

Our clear focus is on good quality, easy-to-use products.

You can see and hear exactly what any proposed system or combination will look and sound like, right here in store.

We stock the entire range of Yamaha and NAD theatre and stereo products, and Paradigm speakers and sub-woofers, plus a comprehensive range of Hi-Fi brands such as McIntosh, Olive HDD music servers, Roksan, Spendor, Moon, DynAudio, Velodyne, Mirage, Energy, AKG, Niles, Elan and Project.

In store you will see Home Theatre projectors from Optoma, Epson and Sim2; plasmas from Panasonic and LCD TVs from Schaub Lorenz and Metz.

Complementing these core brands are audio cables and interconnects by WireWorld and Nordost and many good quality smaller items like headphones, mini systems, clock radios and products to make the most out of your iPod and MP3 player.

We offer a full new home pre-wire and custom installation service and work wonders in existing homes too.

Our Mandeville Street store features four demo areas, three of which are fully enclosed rooms, all set up as living areas. Fifteen to twenty different stereo, theatre and multi-room audio systems are set up and running in store, so there is always something new to see and hear.

There are a wide range of speaker systems and electronic packages, including in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, plasma/LCD televisions, projectors and electric screens and lifts as well as lighting control systems.

Our service extends well past the day of your purchase. We service and repair what we sell and we guarantee to trade in any item we have sold towards your next purchase.

We have a great second-hand department for those looking for a bargain.

Call and see if we are open on other public holidays.

There is also The Listening Post in the North Island, based in Hamilton - you can reach them at www.listening.co.nz

The Staff

  • Crighton Weir

Crighton Weir owns and manages the Christchurch branch of The Listening Post. He has been leading the team there since 1999, and was involved in the industry for many years prior.
Previously from a commerce and management background, his love of fine music and film drew him into hi-fi. Crighton puts a whole new spin on the obsessive stereotype, quick to find the latest tweak or subtle system improvement for his customers. He's always on hand to help with a simple explanation to the most technical of questions. His years of experience in HiFi and Theatre means he is able to explain and "translate" the technical aspects of products into easy to understand key features and benefits. His drive for providing his customers with great quality products is only surpassed by his level of customer service. Favourite Album: Annie Lennox - Greatest Hits. Favorite Movie: Sherlock Holmes.

  • Andrew

Andrew has headed up the Custom Installation team for several years now. He has a wealth of experience to draw on, and an almost fanatical attention to detail. Coupled with his remarkable problem-solving ability, Andrew makes technology behave. Andrew is a professionally trained ballroom dancer, and has represented New Zealand in a number of international competitions. This training has endowed him with a sharp ear and intuitive sense of sound. If you want it done right, talk to Andrew. Favourite Album: Hillsong Compilation. Favorite Movie: Point Break.

  • Jamie

Jamie has worked with hi-fi for many years, on both the wholesale and retail sides of the industry. He came to Christchurch to study electrical and electronic engineering, and after years of training and a B.Eng.Tech to his name, Jamie now has a comprehensive understanding of both audio and engineering. This background gives him a real edge when it comes to explaining the engineering differences between each brand. But more importantly, Jamie can describe these differences in plain language - a rare quality for an engineer! So if you want something decent, but you're not sure what the brochures are telling you, come in and ask Jamie to translate. Favourite Album: Grails - Black Tar Prophecies Vol I, II, III. Favorite Movie: The Baader-Meinhof Complex.

  • Ray

Ray has a background in live sound and audio production. He works alongside Andrew as the other half of the Custom Install team. Always keen to get his hands (and hair and face) dirty under your house or in your ceiling, Ray's practical experience and can-do attitude make him a true asset to the store and our customers. If you need it done right the first time, and you need it done now, then ask Ray. He loves it. Favourite Album: Tomahawk - Tomahawk. Favourite movie: Fight club.

  • Jason

Hailing all the way from the USA, Jason is the most recent addition to our team. He is a qualified studio engineer, a keen musician and a long time hi-fi lover. Jason has a great ear for what sounds good and a depth of technical knowledge. Favourite Album: Trifonic - Emergence Favorite Movie: Requiem for a Dream

  • Donna

Donna is a qualified and experienced interior designer. When not running Donna Weir Design, she works at The Listening Post doing the accounts and admin. Donna's skills in interior design are often called upon to help clients with everything from custom cabinet design and furniture, to matching the overall decor in the most elaborate Man Cave. Donna's network of furniture makers, joiners, builders, plasterers and painters prove invaluable and a superb asset to our customers. Favourite Album: Something to cook her Husband Dinner by. Favorite Movie: Up.

  • Murray

Murray has been working in the Telecomunications industry for over 30 years. His experience in phone and data systems for both residential and small businesses means there are few problems Murray can't work out. His love of Hi Fi and technical skill make him Christchurche's best turntable mechanic as well as an expert on vintage kit.
