A DAC is a Digital-to-Analog Converter. It converts a digital signal from a CD or computer to an audio signal that can be amplified and sent to your speakers. An external DAC, especially for a laptop, will make a HUGE difference in sound quality, as it removes the circuits associated with producing sound away from the bunched up internals of the computer. A DAC also makes a nice upgrade to an existing CD player, and can breathe new life into an ageing system.
